About Our Training Services
J-SAT trainers have conducted trainings in over 30 states and several countries in a variety of correctional agency settings. Our experience ranges from small, one-day trainings with a handful of managers,
line staff, or administrators to year-long trainings of 1,400
officers and supervisors. We have worked with systems
plagued by political hurdles, limited resources, and staff
burnout and resistance to change.
Some of our more recent clients include:
San Diego County Probation,
Los Angeles County Probation,
Cook County Probation (Chicago),
the Connecticut Judicial Branch,
Hawaii Public Safety Department and Judicial Branch Probation,
the Colorado State Mental Health Hospital.
Topics trained have included
offender assessment
,
management strategies
, officer/offender contact strategies,
Motivational Interviewing
(MI) interpersonal skills,
Evidence-Based Practices
,
quality assurance
,
Cognitive-Behavioral treatment
(CBT) methods, research overviews, and other combinations of criminal-justice topics.
Trainer Qualifications
In cases where the assessment and skill training services that we offer have professional, external certification available, we have made sure that our trainers are certified and up to date. Currently, five of our trainers are members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), certified as trainers of trainers by MI founders Drs. Miller and Rollnick. In addition to being certified to train the popular adult assessment, the
Level of Service Inventory (LSI-R)
, our trainers have been certified by tool creators Andrews and Bonta in the updated and more extensive
Level of Service/Case Planning Inventory (LS/CMI)
.
In cases where external certification is not available, J-SAT has often designed and research-tested the assessments and tools presented so that our trainers are the best qualified to train tool implementation.
Our Training Process
After you
contact J-SAT
to establish what kind of training needs your agency has, our Training Coordinator will contact the person in your agency who has been assigned to handle staff and training venue scheduling. After the logistics of the training have been verbally finalized, we will draft and submit a contract and budget to your agency and respond to any contracts your agency requires.
Depending on the workshop you choose, trainings generally last between 1 and 3 days. We will send our trainers to your agency for on-site training, assigning one trainer for every 15-20 participants in attendance. We charge by the number of trainers required and the number of on-site, travel, and training preparation days appropriate for your selected workshop schedule. As our standardized services require less preparation, we can provide them at lower rates than are possible for workshops that must be adjusted or created to fit individual agency needs.
Before the training begins, we will either provide you with training materials required or inform you as to how to obtain them. In some cases, participants may be encouraged to review related readings as a prerequisite for training attendance.
During the training, trainers will identify:
Champions of the training and its expected outputs/outcomes,
Opinion leaders having influence in the direction of expected outputs/outcomes,
Star performers (potential trainers and leads),
Managers directly involved with the training who may play a role in implementation of trained skills, and
Agency issues raised by the participants that must be addressed for successful training skill implementation.
Trainers will also conduct pre- and post-tests that will be scored and graphed to show how well participants have learned the desired skills. These normative data, staff evaluations of the trainers, and summaries of the bulleted points above will be combined into
a post-training report
submitted to relevant management or administrative staff in your agency.
Should you have any further questions regarding our training experience, qualifications, or services, please

and we will be happy to give you any further information you require.
Training and Curriculum Development
In addition to the standardized workshops detailed on our website, J-SAT is able to tailor existing workshops to individual customer needs or develop new workshops or curricula as needed. We have developed and tailored a wide variety of seminars and workshops to individual client needs during the last 10 years.
