Advanced MI Training

For graduates of the MI Fundamentals Training, this 2-day advanced training:
  • Maximizes retention of skills learned, following recent MI-skill retention research,(i)
  • Discourages use of MI-inconsistent interviewing skills that increase client resistance, and
  • Stresses skills and strategies that elicit client commitment to change.

Workshop Structure
  1. Pre-Training Preparation

To ensure the best possible use of the 2 on-site training days, participants read preparatory materials and submit audio or video tapes of a recent MI interview that they conducted with a client or offender for critiquing to identify skills that should be the focus of training. J-SAT also works with managers to ensure that they are prepared to reinforce the new skills participants will learn.

  2. Skills Trained

This level of training teaches participants how to:
    • Work with various forms of client resistance,
    • Reflect multiple sides of client ambivalence toward change so that clients can proceed,
    • Develop discrepancy between client ideals and actual behavior to increase client motivation to change,
    • Elicit change talk from clients that moves from desire, ability, reasons, and need to change, all the way to commitment and taking steps toward change.

  3. Practice and Feedback

J-SAT uses a copyrighted software application to give participants immediate objective feedback on their MI performance. Graphed profiles show individual participant performance as compared with the class average, targeting specific areas of improvement. Workshop facilitators explain individual performance results to the participants and coach participants between sessions for improvement on later practice sessions.

  4. Receive Post-Training Feedback & Coaching

After training has been completed, certified J-SAT staff critique audio-taped interviews submitted by course graduates. Graduates receive a comprehensive report, giving field-performance feedback and coaching.

After participants receive their feedback report, trainers follow-up with ½ hour telephone consultations allowing participants to receive help with implementing MI skills effectively in their area of work. Recent studies on MI training have shown this model of workshop + written critique + telephone-coaching to be the most effective means of ensuring skills transfer.

In addition, specified contact persons in your agency will receive a post-training report including:
  • Graphs highlighting training group strength and growth areas in pre- and post-test knowledge gains and pre- and post-training skill implementation levels,
  • Written suggestions about on-going participant coaching, and
  • Lists of organizational development issues raised during training that will be key to ongoing implementation of MI skills.

While advanced training can ensure skill retention for up to one year, annual "booster sessions" or other quality control mechanisms are necessary for ensuring that staff use the skills they have learned long-term. You may want to consider asking J-SAT about our Training of MI Trainers so that your own staff can provide in-house trainings and "booster sessions" in the future.

Setting Up a Training
